Define the unit

Distinguish an impression, click and accepted action before comparing buying models.

Three metrics answer three different questions

CPM describes the cost of one thousand impressions. CPC describes the cost of a click. CPA describes the cost of an action, such as an accepted sale or lead, depending on the agreement. These terms can describe a buying arrangement or a metric calculated after delivery. A campaign bought on CPM can still be evaluated using an effective CPC or acquisition cost. Always establish whether a reported number is the contracted buying price or an outcome calculated from campaign results.

How to calculate CPM

Divide spend by impressions and multiply by one thousand. A hypothetical $120 spend across 60,000 impressions gives a $2 CPM. For publishers, revenue per thousand impressions is commonly used to compare yield, but the denominator and payable-event definition must be consistent. An ad request is not necessarily an impression: a response can arrive too late or fail to render. Compare the same delivery stage before using a CPM difference to change your allocation.

How to calculate CPC

Divide spend by counted clicks. If that example campaign generates 240 clicks, its effective CPC is $0.50. Click quality matters alongside the average price. Review whether visitors reach the intended page, whether the offer works on their device and whether activity comes from approved sources. Click-through rate describes clicks relative to impressions; it does not establish conversion quality. An attention-grabbing creative can generate clicks that do not match the destination’s offer.

How to calculate CPA and define the action

Divide spend by the number of qualifying actions. If the same hypothetical campaign produces six accepted actions, the calculated CPA is $20. A reported event may later be rejected as a duplicate, invalid lead or cancelled sale according to the offer terms. CPL usually refers to leads and CPI to installs, but the exact requirements still need agreement. Define the event, attribution window, deduplication method and acceptance status before comparing acquisition costs.

Why lower cost is not automatically better

Two sources can produce the same CPA with different customer value, refund rates or lead quality. A source with a higher click cost may be commercially useful if more visitors complete the desired action. For a publisher, a higher headline payout can be offset by lower fill or stricter acceptance rules. Compare a consistent period, market, device mix and outcome. These worked figures are arithmetic examples only, not price quotes or performance forecasts.

Turn reporting into a practical decision

Choose the decision your report should support: whether to revise a creative, test a landing page, investigate a source or increase a budget. Keep delivery, spend, conversions and accepted outcomes together where your reporting allows. MyBestClick’s self-service advertising and performance partnerships have different commercial setups, so confirm the buying model and available reporting for the selected channel. A clear measurement brief helps both sides understand what a successful first test would demonstrate.
