HOW IT WORKS / 01
Map the viewing environment
Identify the player, placement, devices and supported VAST behavior.
Test demand and playback
Validate responses, media compatibility, wrappers and event tracking.
Monitor delivery quality
Review errors and playback completion alongside commercial reports.
UNDERSTAND THE CHANNEL
What is video / vast?
VAST is an XML-based specification used to describe video advertising and tracking. The player interprets the response and reports supported playback events.
TYPES, PLACEMENTS & EXAMPLES
VAST across six viewing contexts.
The player decides where an ad fits in the viewing experience. VAST supplies advertising and tracking information for that compatible player to interpret.

01IN-STREAM / PRE-ROLL
Before a publisher video
A viewer starts a publisher video. Before the main content, the player requests a VAST ad and, if it can use the response, plays the selected creative before continuing into the video the viewer chose.
Test media compatibility and supported playback events. The player must handle an unavailable or unusable response without trapping the viewer.

02IN-STREAM / MID-ROLL
Within a longer video
A longer publisher video contains a planned advertising break. At the break, the player uses its configured VAST connection to request an ad, then resumes the content after the supported advertising sequence has finished.
The player schedules the break; VAST describes the ad. Check content resumption and distinguish ad starts from completed views in reporting.

03IN-STREAM / POST-ROLL
After the main video ends
A viewer reaches the end of a publisher video. The player’s schedule includes a final advertising opportunity, using a VAST response to load an eligible creative before returning to recommendations or the next viewing choice.
Test the transition from content completion to the ad. Report the post-roll’s playback separately from completion of the editorial video.

04OUTSTREAM / PAGE PLACEMENT
A video unit within an article
A publisher places a dedicated video advertising unit within a text article. A compatible outstream player requests VAST demand and renders the creative in that unit, without requiring a separate editorial video to surround it.
Review visibility, playback and sound behavior in the actual page. The outstream player defines the experience; the VAST tag alone does not.

05OPT-IN / REWARDED
A viewer chooses a rewarded video
A visitor chooses to watch an ad for a clearly described benefit. In a compatible rewarded implementation, VAST supplies the video advertising data; the application handles the choice, completion validation and delivery of the promised benefit.
Agree eligible rewarded demand and test cancellation, playback errors and reward validation. A VAST tag alone does not implement the reward system.

06CTV / STREAMING APP
An ad break on connected TV
A streaming application includes an advertising break on a connected television. Its compatible player or ad insertion service uses VAST ad information to prepare the creative for playback within the agreed television viewing environment.
Validate device support, media specifications, ad insertion and event reporting. Television delivery requires its own integration checks rather than a copied web setup.
These examples describe different dimensions: timing, placement, reward model and device environment can overlap. Player support, media compatibility and the agreed demand connection determine delivery; a VAST response does not guarantee playback.
A PRACTICAL START
From your inventory to an agreed integration.
01
Map the viewing environment
Identify the player, placement, devices and supported VAST behavior.
02
Test demand and playback
Validate responses, media compatibility, wrappers and event tracking.

Measure what matters
Distinguish requests, filled responses, starts and completions. Investigate player errors before attributing every gap to demand.
Player, SDK, VAST version and device compatibility are reviewed for each integration. A valid ad response does not guarantee playback.
BEFORE YOU START
Your questions, answered.
Can I use my existing video player?+
Share the player and supported VAST version. We will assess compatibility and the events it can report.
Does VAST guarantee an ad will play?+
No. Availability, response validity, media compatibility and player behavior all affect playback.
